Freighter
It helps to set expectations: the Tuhaa Pae IV is a working freighter, not a cruise ship. Its main job is delivering cargo to the Austral Islands, and passengers come along for the ride. That's exactly the appeal — you watch the crew load and unload freight at each island, share a small communal dining room, and travel the way locals do.
All cabins are air-conditioned, ranging from the Admiral cabin with a private balcony down to bunk-style Lagoon cabins. There's a covered back deck for watching the ocean go by, an open bridge most of the time, and a cafeteria-style dining setup. What you won't find: a pool, a shop, laundry service, or reliable internet at sea.
Days at sea are slow and unscripted — bring a book. In port, you go ashore for included excursions, generally between about 9am and 4pm depending on how long cargo operations take. Evenings are quiet, though crew and locals sometimes bring out a guitar or ukulele.
If you want a genuine, unpolished slice of French Polynesia and don't need resort comforts, it's hard to beat. See prices and the sailing schedule or ask us to help you plan.
