Tubuai & Rurutu: What to See and Do

By Normand — Far & Away Adventures, Austral Islands specialists

Tubuai and Rurutu are two of the Australs' most rewarding stops, and a Classic Voyage visits both.

Tubuai

Tubuai has a wide, shallow lagoon ringed by motu, good for snorkelling and easy beach time. It's also the most historic of the Australs — this is where the Bounty mutineers tried to settle in 1789, and you can still visit Fort George. Tours take in villages, plantations and a marae, with lunch ashore.

Rurutu

Rurutu is higher and more rugged, with limestone cliffs, caves and superb coastal views — and, in season, humpback whales just offshore. Excursions usually combine a village visit, a cave or marae, and lunch at a local guesthouse where you can swim.

Between them they capture the range of the archipelago: lagoon and reef on one island, cliffs and whales on the next. See the full itinerary or read more about wildlife in the southern Australs.
