The Austral Islands: French Polynesia Off the Beaten Path

By Normand — Far & Away Adventures, Austral Islands specialists

Most visitors to French Polynesia never make it past Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. The Austral Islands, far to the south, are a different world — no resorts, very little tourism, and a pace of life set by the sea and the seasons.

Getting there

That remoteness is exactly why the Tuhaa Pae IV freighter matters: it's the supply line that links the islands, and one of the only practical ways to see several of them on a single trip. You travel with the cargo, go ashore where it docks, and experience the Australs much as locals do.

What to expect

Expect basics done well rather than luxury: a simple cabin, communal meals, included island excursions, and genuine encounters with island communities. Expect to disconnect — Wi-Fi is limited and there's no shop on board. And expect scenery, from Raivavae's lagoon to Rapa's hilltop fort, that very few travellers ever see.

If that sounds like your kind of trip, the FAQ covers the practicalities and we're happy to help you plan.

Far & Away Adventures are South Pacific & French Polynesia specialists. Norm has travelled these islands and knows the Tuhaa Pae IV and the Australs firsthand — so the advice here comes from real time in the islands, not a brochure.
