Visiting the Austral Islands on a Budget

By Normand — Far & Away Adventures, Austral Islands specialists

French Polynesia isn't known for being cheap, but the Australs are an exception worth knowing about. A Tuhaa Pae IV voyage bundles your transport between islands, your cabin and your shore excursions into one fare, which removes a lot of the usual à-la-carte costs.

What's included

Excursions on each island — village tours, marae visits, beach picnics — are part of the cruise price. Children under four travel free, kids 4–17 are half price, and there are discounts for third and fourth adults sharing a cabin. See the current prices for the Classic Voyage and Grand Tour.

Keeping costs down

Bring some local cash (Pacific Francs) for craft purchases and small extras, since cards aren't accepted at market stalls. Pack your own snorkel gear and reusable water bottle rather than buying on remote islands where supplies are limited. And consider a couple of budget nights in Papeete before or after — the city has affordable hotels near the market and the evening roulottes (food trucks). The FAQ has more on money and what to pack.

Far & Away Adventures are South Pacific & French Polynesia specialists. Norm has travelled these islands and knows the Tuhaa Pae IV and the Australs firsthand — so the advice here comes from real time in the islands, not a brochure.
